Game development caution
Takeaways
- Lack of understanding leads to an aversion of responsibility.
- Note, I wrote understanding, not knowledge
- Risk aversion seems to be the the overall direction a lot of industries are
heading towards given the scale they handle.
Notes
- People seem to be afraid of taking responsibility of things, or being held
accountable of?
- People seem to not be able to just do the thing.
- They need to ask for permission?
- They need to design it first?
- People don't want to take ownership of things they did not produce?
- People are conflict averse?
- Fear is avoiding risk, which is hindering the quality of the things we
produce.
- The scale of things, money involved, makes people risk averse.
- I think they can do this because the scale of things involved lets them. Is
it really not that much risk comparatively? For individuals or small teams it
might seem like a huge risk, but if we compare to the size of corporations is
it that much different? What if we normalize the metric, something like cost
per individual? Are the costs that different? Most likely yes, if by
individuals we only account for the ICs directly involved. If we account for
shareholders, it might be a different story.
- What if this fear does not come from economical risks, but from a lack of
understanding of what it takes to make something.
- Pandering to bigger and bigger audiences makes people conform to the norm,
making everything monotone.
